For more than 50 years, ENT Center of Utah (ECU) has been a trusted name in ear, nose, and throat care. With five locations, 15 board-certified physicians, and Utah’s only outpatient ENT surgical and imaging centers, the practice has long combined clinical excellence with a commitment to innovation.

As the practice grew—expanding specialties to include pediatric ENT, neurotology, and oncology—technology became both a challenge and an opportunity. When Melissa Matheus joined ECU 15 years ago as an ENT technician, the team consisted of just eight physicians, and nearly everything was manual. “Now, we’ve nearly doubled in size and rely on technology to stay connected across all our sites,” she said.

But growth revealed the limitations of their legacy imaging system. The on-premises PACS was slow and unreliable. Uploads often failed, and physicians sometimes waited hours—or even overnight—to access studies needed before surgery. “Support was almost nonexistent,” Melissa recalled. “We depended on a single local technician who wasn’t always available.”

Doctors often resorted to burning CDs or storing images on hard drives, a process that felt increasingly outdated and inefficient. “We were in the stone age,” Melissa said. “If a doctor needed an image late at night or from home, there was no easy way to get it.” These delays created frustration, slowed collaboration, and introduced unnecessary risk for a practice that worked across multiple locations and hospital systems.

“We were in the stone age... If a doctor needed an image late at night or from home, there was no easy way to get it.”

Determined to modernize, Melissa and the physician leadership team sought a cloud-based imaging solution that could provide fast, reliable access and secure sharing. Their search led them to Purview Image™.

The transition was transformative. Physicians could now log in from anywhere—at home, between clinics, or even in the operating room—to review studies in real time. Sharing became simple and secure through HIPAA-compliant links, eliminating CDs entirely. Integration made exchanging studies with hospitals like the University of Utah seamless.

Purview’s support team also became a true partner. “Our doctors have never even realized when there’s been an issue—support handles it that quickly,” Melissa said. With technical frustration eliminated, the team could focus entirely on patient care.

“Our doctors have never even realized when there’s been an issue—support handles it that quickly.”

The results were immediate. Uploads became faster, access was seamless, and doctors could retrieve what they needed without delay. The intuitive interface encouraged adoption across the staff and physical media was eliminated. “Patients don’t even have CD readers anymore,” Melissa noted. “So sharing images without needing CDs was important.” Physicians can now review imaging from home before the day begins or reference scans mid-procedure.

Today, ECU runs entirely in the cloud. Imaging is faster, more accessible, and more secure than ever. Collaboration with referring providers and hospital partners is effortless, and the frustration of lost CDs or missing studies is a thing of the past. Looking ahead, the practice is exploring AI-driven imaging tools to enhance diagnostic precision and streamline workflows even further.

For ECU, the move to Purview Image was more than a technology upgrade—it was a cultural shift. “We’ve built something modern, reliable, and flexible,” Melissa said. “It’s not just about keeping up. It’s about setting a new standard for ENT care.”
