How Animalius Grew—and Why They Switched to Purview
When Dr. Zoe Lenard, radiologist and co-founder of Animalius in Perth, Australia, talks about her work, her passion is unmistakable. A self-described “vocational veterinarian,” she knew from an early age that she wanted to dedicate her life to veterinary medicine. Her journey began on a small Angora goat farm in rural Australia, with dreams of becoming a country vet. But during her training in Sydney, she discovered radiology through specialists who seemed to effortlessly decode complex images. That spark led her to pursue a radiology residency in Perth, become a registered specialist at just 30 years old, and eventually co-own her first referral practice.

After more than a decade in her previous role, Dr. Lenard and two colleagues envisioned something different: a specialty practice that centered on people, collaboration, and shared values. In 2020, Animalius opened its doors as a modern, warm, and welcoming facility designed to feel unlike the sterile hospitals often associated with veterinary care. Despite launching at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the practice quickly grew from 11 staff members to more than 60, offering radiology, internal medicine, surgery, anesthesia, and dentistry, with a focus on supporting general veterinarians across Western Australia.
Animalius was built around the principle that veterinarians, rather than pet owners, are their primary clients. The practice emphasizes clear communication, fast access to specialists, and seamless referral experiences. In a region as vast as Western Australia, with some referring veterinarians located thousands of kilometers away, tele-radiology and digital access quickly became essential. However, the team discovered that the biggest barrier wasn’t technology itself—it was ensuring complete and accurate case submissions from referring clinics. Training both staff and external veterinarians in digital literacy became a core part of their approach.
As Animalius’ imaging services expanded, the limitations of their original cloud-based PACS became apparent. The system struggled to handle the growing volume of CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy studies. Performance issues slowed down radiologists, advanced image manipulation became cumbersome, and sharing results with referring veterinarians was more complicated than it needed to be. The platform simply could not scale with the rapid growth of the practice or the high expectations of their clinicians and clients.
In response, the team began searching for a new imaging solution. They needed a platform that could grow with them, improve efficiency, support complex diagnostics, and enhance collaboration with referring veterinarians. After evaluating several options, they chose Purview Image™. The cloud-based infrastructure provided the reliability and scalability they required, while the advanced viewer offered speed, high image quality, and intuitive navigation for both specialists and referring clinics. Equally important, Purview’s flexible workflows complemented Animalius’ existing processes rather than forcing the team to adapt to rigid software constraints. The responsive, collaborative support from Purview also ensured that the transition strengthened the practice rather than disrupting it.
Since adopting Purview, Animalius has seen meaningful improvements across their operations. Radiologists can now load and interpret large imaging datasets quickly, reducing bottlenecks and improving turnaround times. Referring veterinarians experience faster uploads, easier sharing, and clearer communication, even across long distances. Staff spend less time troubleshooting and more time focused on patient care, and trainees benefit from integrated teaching tools that allow residents to draft reports safely while learning from attending radiologists. The platform has not only solved technical challenges but also strengthened the foundation of Animalius’ imaging service, supporting both current operations and future growth.
Throughout their journey, Animalius has maintained their focus on values, culture, and collaboration. Dr. Lenard emphasizes that while technology is critical, it is their people, communication, and shared principles that truly define the practice. Animalius continues to expand its specialty services, using Purview as a scalable foundation that allows the team to focus on what matters most: delivering high-quality, compassionate, and collaborative care to veterinarians and their patients across Western Australia.
